Thousands of sheep perish in Vic bushfires

Up to 50,000 sheep have died or will need to be put down as a result of bushfires in Victoria's west.

Firefighters are still trying to contain fires in the Grampians region, which threatened the town of Halls Gap overnight and have burnt about 90,000 hectares.

Victorian Farmers Federation president Simon Ramsay has been inspecting local properties and seeking help for surviving livestock.

"We have been speaking with the Minister for Agriculture over the last 24 hours and they have been good in the past in relation to providing freight subsidies for fodder and agistment," he said.

"We will be looking for a number of coordinators to work across the state to help organise the fencing and also distributing fodder where needed."

Fire crews are continuing to battle a bushfire at Moondarra in Gippsland and say a blaze at Anakie, near Geelong, is not far from being contained.
